Architect Tadao Ando

Tadao Ando's Glass House embodies an extremely simple and restrained architectural beauty. The building evokes the image of a modern, minimalist sculpture, exuding a sense of elegance and refinement. The entrance of the structure is concealed behind a concrete screen wall, giving it a closed-off, introspective feel. This design effectively blocks external views before one enters the building, offering a unique spatial experience.

Moreover, the first floor is elevated above eye level, creating a dramatic contrast and a sense of anticipation. Visitors must step onto the first-floor deck, surrounded by the building and the second floor, to be suddenly greeted by the expansive view of the deep blue sea. This unexpected sight, revealed only after passing through the entrance, creates a memorable moment, engraving the experience into the visitor's memory.

The front of the building, in stark contrast to the closed-off nature of its rear, is entirely finished with glass, giving it an open and expansive appearance. This design blurs the boundary between the interior and the exterior, emphasizing a harmonious interaction with nature. The front facade of the Glass House is designed in a geometric form, with its hands outstretched towards the east, symbolizing a connection with the surrounding environment. This unique shape of the Glass House beautifully expresses its harmony and aesthetic unity with the natural landscape of Seopjikoji, Jeju.
